The Five W’s and the H

In class today, we discussed interviewing. I mentioned the six basic pieces of information your interview should uncover. They are as follows: Who? What? When? Where? Why? and How?

These questions are the basics of journalism. These questions spell out what a good news article should include, so don’t forget them.

To help, here is a graphical look at the 5 W’s and the H:

WHO: THE PEOPLE INVOLVED.
WHAT: THE PROBLEMS, THINGS, IDEAS.
WHEN: PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE OF THE TOPIC.
WHERE: THE PLACES INVOLVED.
WHY: THE CAUSES, REASONS, RESULTS, CONDITIONS.
HOW: HISTORY OR FUNCTION (HOW IT BEGAN OR OPERATES).
